Introduction
The following article discusses the impacts of basic authentication being depreciated and how applications can or cannot support modern authentication. Please see below to identify the application(s) you use for CGU email and calendaring to determine if you need to take action with basic authentication no longer being supported.
Outlook
Outlook on the Web
- If you use a web browser to check your CGU email/calendar at https://office.com or https://outlook.office.com then you do not need to do anything. Outlook on the Web already uses Microsoft’s secure login.
Outlook for PC and Mac
- Depending on which version of Outlook you are using, you may need to upgrade.
- Outlook 2016 or newer: No action needed
- Outlook 2013, 2010, 2008, or 2007: You will need to upgrade to the latest version of Office 365. For University-issued devices, please contact the OIT Help Desk.
Microsoft Outlook Mobile App
- The Microsoft Outlook mobile apps for iOS and Android are fully compatible with Microsoft’s secure login requirement. If you are using Microsoft Outlook app on a mobile device, no action is needed.
Other Mail and Calendar Applications
Mac Mail and Calendar
- Mac OS 10.14 (Mojave) and newer: The Mail and Calendar apps that come with Mac OS 10.14 (Mojave) and Mac 10.15 (Catalina) will continue to work. Depending on how you originally set up your Mac, you may need to delete and re-add your email/calendar account profile to avoid service interruption.
- Mac OS 10.13 and older: The built-in Mail and Calendar apps that came with Mac 10.13 or older will not work. To continue using those apps, you will need to upgrade your Mac OS, or you can switch to using Outlook for Mac or Outlook on the Web.
iOS 11 and newer - Mail and Calendar Mobile Apps
- Open “Settings” and select "Mail" (or "Passwords & Account" depending on your iOS account.)
- Select your CGU email account
- On the next screen, select "Delete Account." This may take a couple of minutes to delete.
- Once deleted, you'll return to the previous page where you can add an account. Select "Add Account".
- Select "Exchange" from the available options, and if prompted, select "Add work or school account."
- Enter your CGU email address. Then select "Sign In."
- When prompted, enter your password. You may get prompted for your MFA method; if so, complete your MFA prompt.
- If permissions are requested, tap "Accept".
- If prompted, select what you want to sync and tap "Save".
- Once completed, go to the Mail app and ensure that your mail account starts to update your inbox.
iOS 10 and older - Mail and Calendar Mobile Apps
- iOS 10 (and earlier) does not support Microsoft’s new method for logging in nor the use of the Microsoft Outlook app (require iOS 13 or higher). To avoid service disruption, you will need to access CGU email through your mobile device's web browser (i.e. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) by going to https://outlook.office.com and login with your CGU email credentials along with your MFA method.
Android devices - Mail and Calendar Mobile Apps
- Android device built-in Mail and Calendar apps do not support Microsoft’s new method for logging in. To avoid service disruption, you need to install Outlook for Android and login with your CGU email account. Please use the following Microsoft documentation to set up Outlook on your mobile device.
IMAP/POP Applications like Thunderbird, Eudora, PINE, etc.
- Email applications that use Basic Authentication in combination with POP, IMAP, or Exchange ActiveSync will stop working. To avoid service disruption, you need to install Outlook.
- Other client applications that do not use modern authentication protocols (not a comprehensive list):
- Android Touchdown
- Android BlueMail
- Most IMAP4 or POP3 clients
- NOTE: Many POP clients delete messages from the server once they have been downloaded to your computer. To avoid losing saved messages, make sure you have backed up your locally stored messages before uninstalling your old email client.
