Support for basic/legacy authentication is being depreciated by Microsoft in October 2022. We are rolling out these changes in stages, hoping to guide people into the newer Authentication methods before Microsoft forces the change. Basic authentication is an older, less secure means of accessing Microsoft 365 services, including email. The depreciation of legacy authentication can impact some mobile app mail clients that do not utilize the modern authentication. As a result, mobile app mail clients, like the built-in iPhone/Android mail app can be impacted.
As a result of this change, some users are receiving emails with a subject of “Your email access has been blocked.” Your account has not been blocked; however, this means that one or more ways in which you access CGU email through your personal device (i.e. smartphone, tablet) utilizes basic authentication, and as a result of the depreciation, that application no longer works to receive CGU email.
If you have received such an email, please refer to the following guidance to assist you with accessing CGU email:
- If you are using an Android device:
- The Android built-in Mail app does not support Microsoft’s new method for logging in. To avoid service disruption, you need to install Outlook for Android and login with your CGU email account. Please use the following Microsoft documentation to set up Outlook on your mobile device. Alternatively, you can access CGU email through your Android's web browser (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, etc.) by going to https://outlook.office.com and logging in with your CGU email credentials along with your MFA method.
- If you are using an Apple device:
- You will need to determine what your current software version is. To find this on your iPad/iPhone, select “Settings” -> “General” -> “About” and then refer to “Software Version”.
- If your Software Version is 10 or lower, your device does not support Microsoft’s new method for logging in nor the use of the Microsoft Outlook app (requires iOS 13 or higher). To avoid service disruption, you will need to access CGU email through your mobile device's web browser (i.e. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) by going to https://outlook.office.com and logging with your CGU email credentials along with your MFA method.
- If your Software Version is 11 or higher, you can still use the Mail app on your iPhone, but you’ll need to delete your CGU email account from your iPhone and re-add it. Below are steps to do so:
- Open “Settings” and select "Mail" (or "Passwords & Accounts" depending on your iOS software version.)
- Select your CGU email account.
- On the next screen, select "Delete Account." This may take a couple of minutes to delete.
- Once deleted, you'll return to the previous page where you can add an account. Select "Add Account".
- Select "Exchange" from the available options, and if prompted, select "Add work or school account."
- Enter your CGU email address. Then select "Sign In."
- When prompted, enter your password. You may get prompted for your MFA method; if so, complete your MFA prompt.
- If permissions are requested, tap "Accept".
- If prompted, select what you want to sync and tap "Save".
- Once completed, go to the Mail app and ensure that your mail account starts to update your inbox.
- You will need to determine what your current software version is. To find this on your iPad/iPhone, select “Settings” -> “General” -> “About” and then refer to “Software Version”.
